Phase 2
Presentation:

Tuesday 8th November 2021

WHAT WILL I BE PRESENTING?

I have decided to gather the most relevant themes regarding my topic Music Psychology, including the avenues that I was able to get to through specific areas of interest. I'd like to educate the class on these topics particularly:

  • The way the brain processes emotions

  • How specific regions of the brain interact with music

  • Music stimulates emotions through brain circuits

  • Sound Design and the way composers can intentionally arrange their music to reach a particular audience and suggest different things

  • Music Therapy and the benefits involving pain management

  • How music can be used to benefit mental and physical health - I can show the importance of this through survey results and question responses.

  • Immersive experiences

  • Visual music / mood-boards

  • Potential game avenues to show I have thought further about this topic and to also influence the class' own suggestions.

WEEK 6 - Presentation

I will be preparing a presentation to conclude Phase 2 of this project which I will present to the class on Tuesday 8th November. I will then gather feedback and ideas as to where I can take this topic further and create possible game concepts.

MUSIC PSYCHOLOGY: PRESENTATION

MY PRESENTATION

How do I take this further?

I firstly decided to display the subject areas that I had in mind to take my point forward and to give the class insight to what my presentation would be about. This involved Music as a therapy tool, primary research such as surveys and sound design.

Brain Circuits

I went into a bit of detail regarding who emotions are stimulated in response to music and used my hand-drawn diagrams in order to make this clearer.

Sound Design

I then went into a little bit about Sound Design and the way composers can arrange their music to suit specific needs.

Projecting Emotions through music

I then linked this to the different musical patterns which can be arranged to manipulate the feelings of the listener and also provided examples as to which keys project which emotions. This will give the class insight into how music can be composed to make us feel things like joy or fear.

Benefits of Music Therapy

I shared my mind-map regarding music therapy benefits to inform the class of the impact on both physical and mental health.

My aim was to make people aware of the benefits of music in general!

In order to support this I shared with the class my results to a survey I recently made about the importance of music to the public. I asked questions such as why do you listen to music? - The responses made it clear that music is globally used to reduce feelings of stress and anxiety in situations which may overwhelm them, as well as to provide a sense of calm and ease. My objective of this was to make people aware that music can be used as a self-care technique to cope with these feelings which is highly accessible to all of us.

Hopefully this encourages the class to think about the advantages of listening to music and influences them to brainstorm ideas related to its benefits. I'd like to take forward an aspect of this because I think it's a great way to encourage self-expression and regulate emotions.

Immersion

I then shared my research into Immersion specifically looking at Virtual Reality experiences and Immersive art exhibitions. I wrote a few points about Immersion and the use of visuals and sound to create an Immersive environment.

The significance of sound

To conclude on sound in media I gathered a few points regarding the importance of sound in media including games. Specifically looking at providing depth and emotion.

Visual Music

I lastly shared some of my visual research in the form of mood-boards including instruments, music sheets and sound waves. I then went into a little bit about Oskar Fischinger and Brian Eno, specifically talking about Immersive environments.

Artist

To conclude my research, I documented artist Mike Lemanski's work and my own approaches to show I have been looking into different ways to visualise music and interpreting this in my own way.

Potential Game Avenues

To conclude my whole presentation, I listed potential game avenues to show I am passionate about the topic and to influence game ideas which can be left on the Kinopio board for suggestions.

FEEDBACK

My analysis of feedback and suggestions from this presentation can be found at the start of Phase 3.
