3D MODELLING DEVELOPMENT:
"Hard surface/organic mixed models that have been procedurally placed to make a large environmental scene"
For my scene, I decided to base it on the theme of my Virtual Reality game concept. Therefore I chose to replicate the player's view of incoming asteroids and use the techniques learned to do so.
How Did I Do It?
-
Firstly, I began by adding a Sub Surface Modifier on levels 6 to the default Cube.
-
I then used Smooth Shading to smoothen the edges.
-
Added a Displacement modifier to change the surface. I changed the texture surface to Clouds, and adjusted the size/depth.
-
I applied the texture and resulted in a rocky looking shape.
-
I increased the subdivisions to achieve a more detailed appearance.
-
I went into edit mode and adjusted the shape of the object by moving the positioning of the vertices.
-
I attempted to texture the Asteroid model using a rock texture, however it did not apply and I am not sure why. (Adjusted mapping and repeat values)
-
I continued with the lighting and placed it where desired.
Particle Systems
-
I then used the technique of Particle Systems to create a basic animation of how my Asteroids will look in a real Virtual Game Environment.
-
I did this by firstly adding a plane and turned it 90 degrees.
-
I then added a Particle System to this Plane and adjusted the frames from 1-20.
-
I turned off Gravity completely and set the Lifetime of the animation to 250.
-
I placed the particle system in front of the Camera and had it so the Particles would come towards the view of the ‘Player’.
-
I duplicated my asteroid model and set the Particle System group to it.
-
This made the smaller particles into several little Asteroid models.

-
I then unchecked Emitter in order for my Plane to not show up during the Render.
-
To make the particles different, I adjusted the Rotation random amount and randomised the size of the particles.
-
Now the asteroids were all different shapes and sizes as well as rotations.
-
Once I played the animation, the asteroids would move towards the camera in my Space environment, which represents the positioning of the Player as they are dealing with incoming asteroids.
-
I imported a Starry Image background however this did not show up in the Render, which Is something I have to now work on.
